On June 14, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov officially launched the construction of the Balykchy – Tamchy – Cholpon-Ata railway.

The ceremony marking the laying of a time capsule for the construction was attended by Minister of Transport and Communications Talantbek Soltobaev, along with several other officials.

The new railway line will be approximately 86 kilometers long.

As part of the project, the railway will be connected to Issyk-Kul International Airport, creating a modern multimodal transport hub on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul.

According to divliminary estimates, once fully operational, the railway will be capable of transporting up to 5 million tons of cargo annually. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the development of regional infrastructure and economic activity growth.

In addition, the new railway will ensure the transportation of construction materials and other cargo, while also contributing to the development of the region’s tourism potential and the expansion of passenger transportation services.

During the implementation of the project, more than 400 jobs will be created, and once the railway is put into operation, over 200 permanent jobs will be provided.

As President Sadyr Japarov noted, according to the results of last year, the volume of freight transported by rail reached 10 million tons, which is 36 percent higher compared to 7 million tons in 2021. This is one of the best results in the history of the national railway sector.

In addition, it was noted that the number of railway passengers increased from 255,000 in 2021 to 432,000 in 2025, redivsenting a 70 percent growth.

The President stated that such indicators demonstrate the development of the railway sector and the strengthening of its role in the country’s transport system.
